Jordan Benjamin, better known by his stage name “grandson” is a Canadian/American alternative artist. He draws inspiration through hip hop, rock and roll, and electronic music, creating a unique soundscape with powerful messages. Lyrically, grandson focuses on social issues and opens up about his mental health and addiction struggles.
Maintaining his mysterious aesthetic, grandson still remains active on social media (primarily Twitter and Instagram) hinting about his new release eulogy. He cleared his entire Instagram page, posting new content for the song, some with lyrics from the new release. A recent post stated the release date will be February 28, along with a tour announcement. Drawn in by the cryptic marketing for eulogy, I had to reach out and get some information on what is to come, and I was able to get some answers.
Hannah: What does the upcoming release “eulogy” mean to you?
grandson: It means everything to me. It’s a departure from this narrator’s perspective I’ve often taken as a songwriter and the beginning of the roll out of a super personal and raw album.
H: “For those experiencing heartbreak from life itself” is part of a caption for the new release. What event or events inspired the project?
G: Growing older, the feeling some doors are closing in my life as I approach 30, pushing myself too hard on tour and too much burning the candle from both ends, I guess.
H: Part of the promotion for “eulogy” included a fresh slate on instagram posting only new content related to the release. How does this tie into the lyrical meaning of “eulogy?”
G: The song feels like a fresh start in some ways for me, and marks the beginning of my start with creative director Zach Bailey, so it felt like a good opportunity to just start from zero.
H: You are open about your struggle with mental health and addiction in your music. How would you describe the relationship between your art and your fans?
G: I hope that fans feel seen and heard and represented and feel like if I can be vulnerable and honest about the shit I’m going through, then they can too.
