May 21st Release of Billie Marten's New Album 'Flora Fauna' & Single 'Garden of Eden' Out Now
British singer-songwriter Billie Marten announced the release of her third album Flora Fauna for May 21 with IMPERIAL Music / Fiction Records; her debut album ‘Writing of Blues and Yellows’ was released in 2017, while Marten was just 17 years old, followed by ‘Feeding Seahorses By Hand’ in 2019. From the new album, Marten released a music video with the single ‘Garden Of Eden’ - filmed by Lydia Poole - having recorded the album with Rich Cooper in London. She says of her new album: “The name ‘Flora Fauna’ is like a green bath for my eyes. If the album was a painting, it would look like flora and fauna - it encompasses every organism, every corner of Earth, and a feeling of total abundance.”
Since garnering popularity on YouTube from age 12 onwards, Marten has a devoted, longstanding fanbase and has been amassing international praise for her music. The New York Times says that, “Her voice is smoky and imperturbable, but the music isn’t. It starts with a restless bass riff and gathers percussion and counterpoint before blossoming into a full, chiming chorus: ‘I wanna feel alive.’” Marten cites bands like Can, Broadcast, Arthur Russell, and Fiona Apple as influences and models for her music.
Marten describes her single Garden of Eden, out on Spotify since January, as such: “It’s a song of growth, and competition to evolve as individuals in an increasingly suffocating and vacuous society. I liked the idea of humans growing up like tomatoes in the greenhouse, needing water and oxygen and space, but not getting any of it. The choruses act as a burst of relief to allow space to breathe and to express that want of living right. This was one of the first pivotal songs for me as the general sentiment breeds happiness and optimism, which is something I wasn’t particularly familiar with thus far.”
