New-Age Singer & Composer Arooj Aftab Releases LP 'Vulture Prince' on April 23rd
Pakistan-born & New York-based singer & composer Arooj Aftab releases her new album ‘Vulture Prince’ on April 23rd with New Amsterdam Records; two singles from the album - Last Night and Mohabbat - have been released already, the later of which was quickly praised as ‘Best New Track’ by Pitchfork. This LP follows Aftab’s debut 2015 album ‘Bird Under Water’ and 2018 ‘Siren Islands’, which was commended by NPR, who called it one of the “Greatest Songs By 21st Century Women” and in the same year by the New York Times, who recognised her work as one of the “Best Classical Music Tracks of 2018”.
“Vulture Prince is about revisiting places I’ve called mine,” says Aftab, “places that don’t necessarily exist anymore. It's about people, friendships, relationships—some relationships that were unexpectedly short term, and how to deal with that.” Atypically, the single Last Night interprets a 13th century Rumi poem in Sufi-Reggae style; Aftab would often play this version on stage, but this is the first time it has been put down on vinyl. The album is accompanied and enlivened by an ensemble of musicians: Badi Assad, Maeve Gilchrist, Jamey Haddad, Kenji Herbert, Shazhad Ismaily, Juliette Jones, Petros Klampanis, Nadje Noordhuis, Gyan Riley, and Darian Thomas.
In addition to the creation of this new album, Aftab has spent the better part of 2020 composing music for the Academy Award-shortlisted film Bittu and sang on artist Residente’s Grammy Award-winning single Antes Que El Mundo Se Acabe.
Soon after 'Vulture Prince' was written, Aftab suffered the loss of her younger brother, Maher - she dedicates this album to his memory.
