Saxophonist Jimmy Carpenter is proud to announce the release of his first solo recording, Toiling In Obscurity. Known in New Orleans for his work as tenor player and horn arranger with Walter "Wolfman" Washington and Eric Lindell, his new release showcases his talents as singer, songwriter, arranger and producer. Carpenter is backed by an ensemble of New Orleans' finest musicians, including John Gros (keys), John Fohl (guitar), Casandra Faulconer (bass), and Wayne Maureau (drums), with guest appearances by Walter "Wolfman" Washington, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Matt Perrine, Craig Klein and more (see complete personnel below). "I've been at this a long time, and I've wanted to do this forever. It's realization of a dream to finally be able to make this record here in New Orleans with these stellar musicians." Personnel: John Gros, keys; John Fohl, guitar; Casandra Faulconer, bass; and Wayne Maureau, drums. Special guests include Walter "Wolfman" Washington and June Yamagishi (guitar), Big Chief Monk Boudreaux (tambourine/vocals), Matt Perrine (sousaphone), Craig Klein and Rick Trolsen (trombone), Shamarr Allen and David Jumper (trumpet), Peter Harris and Mark Pero (bass), Michael Skinkus, Uganda Roberts and Seguenon Kone (percussion), Norwood "Geechy" Johnson (bass drum), Danon Smith and Caren Green (vocals). Produced by Jimmy Carpenter with assistance by Chris Finney. About Jimmy Carpenter and Toiling in Obscurity: Jimmy Carpenter has made a living playing music for more than 25 years, and as strictly sideman for the last decade. He has contributed to numerous major label recordings, including three CD's with international blues guitarist Jimmy Thackery, Whiskey Store Live, a collaboration with Thackery & Houma's Tab Benoit, Tab's 2005 release Fever for The Bayou (BMA's Album of the Year 2006), Eric Lindell's Low on Cash, Rich in Love, and most recently, Walter "Wolfman" Washington's Doin' The Funky Thing, for which he wrote the horn arrangements. Locally he is the featured sax on The Sophisticats '06 release When it Rains, it Purrs. He currently plays with Walter, Eric Lindell, 101 Runners and The Sophisticats, as well as freelance work around New Orleans. "Sax player Jimmy Carpenter has a flair for arranging horns." Downbeat Magazine September '08 Toiling In Obscurity is his first solo effort, a project long-planned and mulled over and put off and picked up again. These songs are from various stages of his life and career, from "On the Skids", a dark tongue-in-cheek ballad written in 1986, to "Don't Believe It", a funky call for healthy skepticism written just in time to be included. Covers include a brassed up arrangement of Dr. John's "Back by the River", and a gospel-tinged "Shine a Light" by The Stones.
