The Bravest Birds, Rob Lutes' sixth full-length CD, is an exquisite collection of songs and atmospheric musical journeys that inhabit the intersection of blues, Americana and the contemporary singer-songwriter genres and includes the blazing instrumental Turning Point. Apart from longtime collaborator Rob MacDonald, the impressive group of musicians with Lutes on this release in-clude Rob Fahie (Nikki Yanovsky) on upright bass, Mark Nelson (Ian Kelly) on drums, Josh Zubot (Notre Dame de Grass) on violin. Boyle also makes guest appearances the live-in-studio take of Look Out Boy and their other co-write, Ithaca Waterfall. Praise for 'the bravest birds': Now a veteran and respected singer and songwriter, Lutes is celebrating an incredibly strong mid-career set of songs. I've always been a fan of his mature writing and exceptional voice, but this record is a new triumph. From the opening track to the final notes, Lutes has produced another set of top-notch songs. Check out the exceptional 'Still Dark'. He chose highly skilled sidemen for the project, but his musical brother, Rob MacDonald, whom Lutes tours with, is the heart of the band. Completely unique on the Canadian scene, he has more in common with Kelly Joe Phelps, Chris Smither, John Gorka and the late Bill Morrissey then he does with his Canadian brethren - a breath of fresh air to my mind. The country will be delighted with this record, and as more and more audiences have the luxury of 'discovering' Lutes formidable talents, they will be combing over this record and his back catalogue in an effort to grasp what some of us have known for a long time - this cat is the real deal. I'd have Rob Lutes on any stage I produce, and often do. Matt Large Hello Darlin' Productions Festival Folk sur le Canal.
