"I love to write songs and sing. But sometimes I just play. When I do, it sounds like this." In 2009 Brooks Williams decided to take advantage of a brief gap in an otherwise busy touring schedule to record his most requested solo guitar instrumentals. Over the years these melodic, finger-twisting tunes have been dotted here and there in gigs and on CDs. But the demand for these fan favourites to be on one CD was increasing, so he booked the studio and spent the better part of one winter's day recording 14 tracks. The next day he boarded a plane for yet another tour and, as demands for his time increased, the project was put on the shelf, pretty much forgotten and lost. Until now, nearly four years on, when Williams rediscovered these lost recordings in a box in the back of a cupboard. Mixed by Chris Pepper and Williams at The Hub Studios in Cambridge, and updated with a few new tracks, the result showcases what a guitar sounds like in the hands of a master who is ranked in the Top 100 All-time Acoustic Guitarists. The performances virtually jump out of the speakers. You may have heard some of these tunes before but you've not heard them played like this! Brooks' Guitars gives the listener a glimpse into the scope of Williams' playing. His sound is singular yet encompasses a broad range of styles including bluesy picking ("Belfast Blues"), open tunings ("South Hill"), jazzy melodies ("Chelsea Boots"), traditional classics ("Love Me Tender") and even some sultry slide guitar ("Goodbye Walker Percy"). With a few new songs added to the set list ("Joanna" and "Morning Captain"), this is a vibrant collection of guitar music - and you can hear it all on Brooks' Guitars.
