David Borgo - tenor and soprano saxophones John D'Earth - trumpet and flugelhorn Alan Ferber - trombone Sam Wilson - guitar Pete Sparr - bass Mark Ferber - drums David Pope - alto saxophone (on 7) Roberto Miranda - bass (on 6 and 9) Saxophonist David Borgo has been performing jazz and improvised music for over 20 years. He won the 1994 International John Coltrane Competition and has toured throughout Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the United States. He currently is the Director of Jazz at the University of California, San Diego. REVIEWS of Massanetta Springs: Borgo has the history of the music down pat; his tunes offer a flavoring of post-bop structure, but he steers the bands unerringly into the current era through his gliding improvising style and tune construction.... He touches on the past, teases with the future, but mainly speaks in the present tense. -- Frank Rubolino, All About Jazz These guys are genuinely together, really tight, & the recording is of that 'classic' quality that will have you spinnin' th' CD over & over again... MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- Rotcod Zzaj, Improvijazzation Nation This album isn't about one person's genius. It's about the beauty of a sextet working songs to the limit. -- Jon Worley, Aiding&Abetting Borgo's wild flight over the jouncing rhythm team is fresh and sometimes even dryly laconic... and the original melodies are knotty and memorable. Mr. Borgo and band are looking for a new combination of the elements of 'free' and 'hard bop'... this CD is worth a listen for anybody wanting to hear the beginnings of a new approach. -- Kenneth Egbert, Jazz Now David Borgo's Masanetta Springs splashes all over the jazz spectrum, from swing to free... Borgo has a lovely warm tone on tenor sax and a gracious one on soprano. -- Francois Couture, All Music Guide Borgo is a saxophonist and composer with a range encompassing both old and new forms of jazz... he's surrounded himself with some sharp players and they go off in really interesting directions. -- RKF, Dead Angel Throughout the album we get plenty of fire, as well as passionate serenity... Overall, a very nice set of music. -- Volkmar Mantei, Ragazzi.
