These are new recordings and compositions from one of the last still-active singers and guitarists from the great bolero romántico generation. Once a member of the legendary trio Los Tres Ases (from 1960 to 1966) and having been away from studio recording since 1968, Gustavo López returns with a priceless musical record his life and the history of a generation captured in these songs. LINER NOTES: I had the good fortune of meeting Gustavo López on March 5, 1997 at a 'bolero summit,' at La Peña, a music series that I have produced for the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago for ten wonderful years. As a musician, I have always admired 'trio' style bolero romántico for it's melodic and harmonic complexity and heart-wrenching lyrics. I must confess that I was first drawn to Gustavo's glamorous past with Los Tres Ases, one the legendary trios in the history of bolero. However, later I have come to know another side of him, which has led us to the production of this disc. Gustavo López (b. 1938) came to Chicago first in 1963 as a member of Los Tres Ases. He began to play bolero romántico professionally at the age of 15, and he has done nothing else for a living since. In 1960, after recording twelve sides for RCA Victor and Capitol Records with Trio Los Angeles (1958 to 1960), he was invited to replace Los Tres Ases lead singer Marco Antonio Muñíz. Gustavo recorded three LPs with them on RCA Victor, toured extensively and left in 1966. In 1970, Gustavo moved to Chicago. What followed was a long solo career, and a personal journey of self-discovery, with love found and love lost, and extended departures to Florida, Detroit, Calgary, and Los Angeles, sometimes lasting several years; all with the musical backdrop of bolero romántico and in the aftermath of being a member of one of the greatest trios in the world. This is where this collection of Gustavo López's unpublished compositions begins. As a producer, I wanted to show Gustavo López as I know him, as pure as I could, alone, and as good a musician as he is, with his voice and his guitar, and nothing else. It is my sincere hope that this comes through in this recording. Enjoy! Juan Díes, Producer ************ Tuve la buena fortuna de conocer a Gustavo López el 5 de Marzo de 1997 en un 'encuentro de bolero' en La Peña, una serie de música que he producido para Old Town School of Folk Music por diez maravillosos años. Como músico, siempre he admirado el estilo de trio en el bolero romántico por su complejidad melódica y armónica y sus apasionadas letras. Debo confesar que mi primer interés en conocer a Gustavo López fué debido a su glamoroso pasado con Los Tres Ases, uno de los legendarios trios en la historia del bolero. Sin embargo, mas tarde he llegado a conocer otra parte de él, lo cual nos ha llevado a la producción de éste disco. Gustavo López (n. 1938) llegó a Chicago por primera vez en 1963 como miembro de Los Tres Ases. El había comenzado a tocar el bolero profesionalmente a los 15 años y desde entonces no se ha ganado la vida de otra manera. En 1960, tras grabar 12 temas para RCA Victor y Discos Capitol con el Trio Los Angeles (1958-1960), fué invitado a reemplazar al solista de Los Tres Ases, Marco Antonio Muñiz. Gustavo grabó tres LPs con ellos para RCA Victor, hizo giras extensas y dejó el trio en 1966. En 1970, Gustavo mudó a Chicago. A esto le siguió una larga carrera de solista, y una odisea de descubrimiento personal, con amores y desamores, episodios de varios años en Florida, Detroit, Calgary y Los Angeles, siempre con el fondo musical del bolero romántico y en los escombros de haber sido miembro de uno de los más grandes trios del mundo. Promoters, such as César Dovalina, founder of 'Las Margaritas' on Rush Street, Freddie Pizano, owner of 'La Hacienda del Sol' on Sedwick & Lincoln, and Charlie Gómez, producer of movie/concert shows at the Atlantic, the Marshall, the Congress, and the Senate, brought legendary groups like Los Tres Caballeros and Los Tres Ases for several month long stints of which Gustavo and other great musicians were a part of.
