Lenny Carlson is a Los Angeles-born composer, arranger and guitarist. His music draws largely from jazz and classical traditions. He has produced four recordings of original music, and has composed for live performance, film, video and theater. He has received numerous awards, including a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Composition. Current composition projects include Three Episodes for Quintet, a jazz/classical fusion work, and Hyphen Dance, a tango for solo cello. Echolocation is a collaboration with violinist Bridget Dolkas, founder of the California Quartet. Entirely notated (with no improvisation), each movement contains melodies, rhythms and harmonies associated with different jazz styles. The work was inspired in part by the 1984 Kronos Quartet recording of the music of Thelonious Monk.
