Silberglicity, the classic 1996 debut album of accomplished Milwaukee-area jazz guitarist Paul Silbergleit, has finally been re-released, available now in physical and digital formats. It's a fine record of original compositions and arrangements that enlivened the area jazz scene of the time, and of the playing of several of it's key musicians, including the legendary Berkeley Fudge, with strong statements on tenor and soprano saxophone, and pianist Mark Davis, chair of the celebrated jazz department at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music (who himself contributes two lovely tunes here). The forceful flugelhorn of Mike Plog rounds out these performances, along with the solid foundation of bassist Robert Siegel and drummer Mike Schlick. A colorful variety of rhythms and textures permeates the album, from a quintet version of the relaxed and graceful title track, through the funky and surprising 'Easy-T' played by the full group, the bossa-esque beauty of 'Fly On, Strange Bird,' and a forceful rendition of 'Cheek to Cheek,' to the introspective and mysterious solo guitar statement of 'Round Midnight.' Swinging and melodic from start to finish, and still fresh in spirit and content, these tracks are worth visiting and revisiting for jazz lovers everywhere.
