'...solid roadhouse music for a Saturday night romp...' Blues Revue Magazine ...an ace of a blues/rock/rockabilly guitarist, Whitey sings/ speaks/croaks with a voice from the timeless land of cigareets (sic) and whiskey, and at least the memory of wild, wild wimmen (sic)...'. Life - The daily Dose informs his every move, gives even his rigor a flexibilty, a subtle nuance, a shading.' Richard Meltzer San Diego Reader 'Conwell's voice, reminiscent of Eric Clapton, moves easily from a growl to a croon. His music is lyrical and unpretentious. His performance is airtight'. Larry White AdultPop.com 'Conwell performs straight ahead...evocative of the working class sweat and grind and worthy of any juke!' Dave Good San Diego Reader Growing up we had one of those great, big console stereo units. It was so expansive it seemed to take up an entire wall. But the sounds that came out of those speakers was like magic to me. My mother had a very eclectic records collection. Opera, pop, country, jazz. Aural gold that I mined at an early age. When I finally got my first stereo (a GE Wildcat!) I began buying records in earnest. I didn't connect with most of the popular music of my 70's youth. I searched for music that hit me on an emotional level and usually found it in the 'cut out' bin of my local record store. I found that connection in blues, soul, early R&B, twangy country and western swing. I connected with the simple brilliance of Chuck Berry lyrics. The hypnotic groove and power of Howlin' Wolf. The smooth and soulful deliveries of Bobby Bland and Little Junior Parker. The blues shouting of Big Joe Turner and Jimmy Witherspoon. The raw energy of Hound Dog Taylor. The raucous barroom delivery of Commander Cody. The great writing of Buddy Holly and the western swing of Asleep At The Wheel. I played in local CT bands from 1981 (my first gig at Baker's Café in Hartford paid me $5.00!) until 1985 when I received a scholarship to The Berklee College Of Music in Boston. In 1986 I took up the tenor sax and with a year was performing 250+ gigs a year with New England favorite Shirley Lewis & The Movers. Shirley eventually left and I assumed front man duties on guitar and vocals. I relocated to San Diego in 1992 and began a music career as Whitey Conwell. I released two CD's (Stay Tuned and Tales From The Backseat CQR 1018) and played my butt performing 300+ gigs a year both in the US and Europe. In 2003 I moved to Austin where I continue to write, record and perform.
