Writing in Down Beat in 1952 Ralph Gleason opined "The Gerry Mulligan Quartet is certainly the freshest, most interesting sound to come out of jazz in some time." This was of course the now legendary group with Chet Baker, Bob Whitlock and Chico Hamilton which became a kingpin of the "new West Coast jazz" movement. Since those early days Mulligan's career took him far and wide. 1959 found Gerry touring Europe with probably the finest of the post-Baker Quartets and it is difficult to imagine a player more suited to act as a foil to Mulligan than the superb trumpeter Art Farmer - heard here along with Bill Crow and Dave Bailey providing just the perfect blend needed.
