Starting out as a group called Barbara J. & The Silver Slippers at the beginning of the 1960s, Barbara Sullivan, her younger sister Shirley Sullivan, and Kim Lewis were protégées of the popular singing group The Jive Five. They also recorded as The Sweethearts on Brunswick Records, and later on as the Lovables on Toot Records. The Lovables had a regional hit with the single "You're the Cause of It All." Although they began with a bang, they never achieved national recognition. Nevertheless, the ladies shined at the Apollo and other local venues in the New York area where they were popular. Lead singer Barbara Sullivan's voice was described as a cross between Dionne Warwick's and Aretha Franklin's. Featured here is Barbara J. & The Silver Slippers ultra rare 1961 single "Laughing At Me" b/w "Love Is The Thing." Side A ("Laughing At Me") is a lovely doo-wop tinged ballad, while the flip side, "Love Is The Thing," is a more upbeat affair. They are backed on both tracks by the Joe Rene Orchestra, who also were the backing group on many of The Jive Five's hits. The classic single has been newly remastered and finally made available in the digital domain.
