In addition to Beethoven's five original piano and cello sonatas, this Magueleone recording includes Op. 64 in Eb major, which is in fact a transcription of the String Trio Op. 3/1 (1792-96), published in transcription in 1807. This arrangement could only have been made with the composer's consent. Transcriptions were a common practice at the time; they had the twofold advantage of spreading and promoting a work as well as providing a basic income for the composer. Although called a Sonata, it is actually a Divertimento in six movements, a direct descendent of Mozart's K. 563 (1788). Apart from the quality of this youthful work, it's presence on this recording makes it possible to realize just how much Beethoven developed the depth of his musical language when he tackled the sonata form for these two instruments, starting with Op. 5 (1796). That evolution continued with the Third Sonata Op. 69 (1807-08) and the later, final two works in this form (Op. 102, 1815). Whilst there remained much to be expressed, ten more years of composition followed Opus 102. These sonatas nevertheless bear witness to a monumental itinerary, they are milestones in the life of a man who resolutely imagined the art of music for times to come.
