One of the most overlooked soul singers of all time, Brooks O’Dell has become somewhat of a legend among collectors of Northern Soul and rare groove records. He’s best known for a series of singles released between 1963 and 1972, and will always be remembered for his 1964 hit, “You Better Watch Your Step.” The legendary producer Jerry Williams Jr. (better known as Swamp Dogg) first met O’Dell in Philadelphia in 1962 when Brooks was one of the most popular club attractions in the Northeast, an they recorded a single together as Brooks and Jerry in 1967. After an 8 year association with Brooks, in 1971, Swamp Dogg signed O’Dell to his Mankind Records label which released Brook’s only known LP, recorded in Muscle Shoals from a series of sessions that began in 1970. Swamp Dogg wrote and arranged most of the album with contributions from Luther Dixon and others. Presented here is that overlooked soul masterpiece, entitled “Turn My World Around.” All selections have been newly remastered.
