'A powerful statement...' Gary Gone, Independisc.com 'Somewhere in Blue will brighten your day and reaffirm your belief in the power of rock 'n' roll to stay with us throughout our adult lives.' Jim Testa, Jersey Beat 'Sweet buoyant songs should make it an immediate favorite...' Jay Lustig, Star Ledger **************************************************************** "Somewhere in Blue" is the debut full-length CD by Deena Shoshkes, lead singer/guitarist for The Cucumbers. The sounds on "Somewhere in Blue" are a unique blend of new wave rockabilly, country and folk rock, filtered through Deena's long-time indie pop sensibilities. Songs written with Tennessee-based lyricist David Graham (four of which appear on the CD) led Deena into country music, old and new, and southern rock, and inspired a new voice and direction in Deena's solo songwriting as well. Recorded in Nashville, with producer Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Josh Rouse) and New Jersey, with The Laughing Boys, Tom Lucas and Ed Iglewski, the recordings bridge the distance between Deena's roots in New Jersey music (from Hoboken indie pop to the Jersey shore) and alt country Americana. Deena's songwriting has been called 'direct and artful,' by the New York Times. Her voice has been described as '...incredible: kidstuff and wisdom merged,' by the Village Voice. Deena's songs have been recorded by Jackson Browne, Valerie Carter and Jonatha Brooke and featured in many films. Guest musicians include Pat Karwan (1910 Fruitgum Co.), Stone Jack Jones, Jonathan Gregg (pedal steel), Brian Wolfe (My Brightest Diamond) and Tom Cottone (The Churchills). "Deena is a songbird, a spirit "out there in the galaxy," with a voice as sweet, supple and simple, and at the same time as soulful and complex, as any you will hear. Her songs are a blend of country, folk, rock, and a bit of soul, all rooted in the power pop where she started in her much-loved band of the 80s and 90s, the Cucumbers. Deena is known mostly for her voice, and not simply the unmistakably beguiling vocals, but her voice as a songwriter. Somewhere in Blue goes many places, all of them skyward. " --Jason Friend.
