Why some artists achieve the recognition they deserve while other equally talented ones don't depends on many things. But one thing is clear, that obscurity does not always mean lack of talent. 'The Diamond Five' was founded in 1959 and lasted until 1964. They are a Dutch quintet led by pianist Cees Slinger and were based as a resident band at the famous 'Sheherazade' jazz club in Amsterdam. This quintet with Jacques Schols (b), John Engels (dr), Harry Verbeke (sax) and Cees Smal (tr) delivered a beautiful and timeless record, with crystal clear sound from an extremely talented but sorely under recognized European group that yet again underscores the universality of jazz.
