Doris De La Torre's rise to popularity in Cuba began with the group Los Armanicos, formed in 1956 and led by famed pianist Felipe Dulzaides, guitarist Pablo Cano and Felipe's brother, Javier, on vocals. When Javier left for America in late 1957, he was replaced by de la Torre. When the quartet recorded in 1958, in addition to Doris, Felipe and Pablo, the lineup included drummer Guillermo Barreto, Julio Fonseca on double bass and the trumpet of Luis Ortellado. These historic sessions produced some of the first recordings of what was to become known as the "Filin'" or "Feeling" movement, spearheaded by de la Torre's sensuous vocalizations, adding a new depth of sophistication and nuance to the bolero form. This style was later popularized by such noted vocalists as Elena Burke, Rene Barios and Omara Portuondo. Presented here is "Imagenes," a song written by the famed Cuban composer Frank Domiguez that would become the anthem of the "Feeling" movement, and de la Torre's signature song. One of the most moving pieces of music from the period of late 1950's Havana, "Imagenes" features the haunting sound of a vibraphone contrasting a scorching vocal performance by the great Doris De La Torre. The B-side, "Ada," is an interesting take on a Jewish folk song. Newly remastered.
