Everything is traveling: the earth is revolving around it's own axis, it's land and water masses, the animals on it, the people. What moves is alive, and it leaves stories behind. Etta Scollo has long been fascinated by this mystery, that all life is in it's own sort of cycle, but also seems to be interconnected. She embarks on a journey with her new album as well, devoting herself to the eternal movement from a completely new perspective. "Il Viaggio Di Maria" focuses on traditional Christmas carols from their native home of Sicily, which include the flight of Mary of Nazareth, who is pregnant with the baby Jesus, to Bethlehem. However, anyone who knows Etta Scollo knows immediately that this is not an ordinary Christmas album, that she is always devoted to a theme on several levels. Unmistakable is the artist in her passion to unveil her homeland with it's shimmering musical and linguistic heritage of different cultures. With "Il Viaggio Di Maria", it is the thousand year old shepherd culture of Sicily, which she turns into a living monument. In doing so, she sets out again in search of her own roots, bringing songs and poetry to radios and stages that are unknown outside of Italy or even at risk of falling into oblivion altogether. The 14 pieces of the album are not melodies that could be heard in churches, but on the squares and streets of villages and towns. "I've known the songs since my childhood, my aunts sang them," she says. They were passed on orally, from generation to generation, and if ethno-musicologist Antonio Uccello had not traveled the country in the 1960s to record the songs of this culture in audio recordings, much of it would have been lost through the period of modernization of Sicily in the 1970s - and 1980s.
