The decision to choose Il Trovatore for the tournée of La Scala in Moscow once again confirmed the importance of the Verdi title. On that occasion a new staging was presented, one that would not be seen in Milan until 1967. Gianandrea Gavazzeni led the formidable quartet of protagonists: Gabriella Tucci, Giulietta Simionato, Carlo Bergonzi and Piero Cappuccilli. Nicola Benois gave the staging strong visual impact and Luchino Visconti skillfully told the story with directing that was true to tradition but able to display the modernity of the conflicts and passions that motivate the characters.
