This important composition written from 1911-13 by Igor Stravinsky was based upon a vision he had while writing another piece: "I saw in imagination a solemn pagan rite: wise elders, seated in a circle, watching a young girl dancing herself to death. They were sacrificing her to propitiate the god of spring." the first performance of this work at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees in Paris provoked one of the most famous riots in musical history. It was made in Chicago's Medinah during three sessions on May 14, 1974. Conducted by the world renowned Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony, this performance captures the mood and essence that Stravinksy originally intended. (Previously deleted:11/1/05.
