Jim Stranahan's new recording Migration to Higher Ground showcases his big band writing skills and multi-reed prowess. Most of the compositions are originals by Stranahan, all deeply rooted in the jazz tradition. Highlights include Mambo Facil which has an opening reminiscent of the fanfare garnered a bullfighter entering the ring, New Orleans inspired Bayou Bounce and Paul and Dave, his tribute to Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond. There are also thoughtfully arranged versions of St. Thomas by Sonny Rollins, In Your Own Sweet Way by Dave Brubeck and Donna Lee by Charlie Parker. Some of the best horn players in Colorado are participants including Brad Goode, Wade Sander, Hugh Ragin and Joe Andries. He is joined on four of the tunes by his son Colin's trio, Stranahan / Zaleski / Rosato.
