Joe Gilman's ninth CD, Americanvas, is his most expansive recording to date, consisting entirely of original material. Gilman and other composers on the date penned interpretations of the canvases of ten American painters from the past 70 years, including Mark Rothko, Keith Haring, Norman Rockwell, and others. Accompanied by four young phenoms in their late teens, Americanvas represents Gilman's focus on showcasing young talent. Gilman describes the album's concept, "Determine the original creative process used to create the painting, and follow that same creative process to compose pieces as vehicles for jazz improvisation."Ad in Downbeat and other publications.
