Brooklyn-based composer and bassoonist Katherine Young writes acoustic and electro-acoustic music for ensembles of many sorts and sizes. With the bassoon, she performs contemporary chamber music, improvises, and plays in pop and rock bands. Her debut solo outing, "Further Secret Origins" is evidence of her personal relationship with the bassoon and interest in it's expressive and sonic breadth. Pushing the boundaries of her double-reed instrument, she creates strange and heavy drones, uncanny little melodies, and dissonant tones. Grounded by a pulse and suspended by a trance-like quality, "Further Secret Origins" confounds expectations for a solo bassoon recording. Highly recommended for those in search of adventurous music.
