It's very unlikely that another saxophonist existed in the entirety of New York City that was as busy in the recording studio as King Curtis was in 1960 - and for that matter, during the years before and after. His diamond-hard yakety solos were crucial to the rock and roll success story of the Coasters, and King's instantly recognizable horn graced countless more '50s and '60s R&B platters as both bandleader and sideman. But Curtis was nothing if not a versatile presence in the studio. He was developing a solid reputation within the jazz field at the dawn of the decade, waxing albums for Prestige with the likes of Nat Adderley, Wynton Kelly, and Oliver Nelson in support. Featured here are two Curtis instrumental originals from the early 1960's: The infectious "Soul Twist" and the plaintive "Lone Prairie." Newly remastered.
