As Patti Page celebrates her 60th anniversary as an international recording star, it is time to acknowledge not only the vastness of her tremendous body of work, but also it's incredibly high degree of quality and versatility. From her earliest years on radio in Tulsa and Chicago appearances with Benny Goodman, she proved her uncanny ability to not only be able to sing just about everything, but to do it well. At the same time she was turning out hit after hit for Mercury Records, she also began recording a large catalogue of classic standards that were issued throughout the 1950's. Some of the best of these, included such more sophisticated songs as "While a Cigarette Was Burning," "Deep In A Dream," "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," "I'll Never Smile Again," "Darn That Dream," and Ellington's "I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart." These were released in 1955 on the 12" album "You Go To My Head". Her crowning achievement came in 1956, when she recorded one of the most challenging projects ever attempted by a pop singer - recording Gordon Jenkins' newly-expanded narrative tone poem "Manhattan Tower" all by herself. The eclectic score was perfectly suited to showcase Patti's amazing ability to master all sorts of material - from the Broadway sophistication of "New York's My Home," "Happiness Cocktail" and "Married I Can Almost Get" to the dramatic ballads "Never Leave Me," "Once Upon a Dream" and "This Close To The Dawn," as well as the jazzy "Indian Giver" and "March Marches On," the novelties "Learnin' My Latin" and "Repeat After Me" and the stunning finale "The Party (Noah)" complete with recitation. "Manhattan Tower" was a tremendous success, both artistically and commercially, reaching No. 18 on the Billboard LP chart, the highest-ranking of any album she ever made. Both "You Go To My Head" and "Manhattan Tower" albums with bonus tracks have been re-mastered and are featured on this CD release.
