Roy Orbison was one of the most talented and distinctive singers and songwriters of the rock 'n' roll era and beyond, with a unique and original approach to writing songs and a remarkable and unmistakeable voice. He was signed to the Sun label alongside Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins, but only had one minor hit during that period despite making some fine rockabilly records, and it was not until joining the Monument label after recording briefly for RCA during 1958 that he hit the big time with the landmark No. 1 "Only The Lonely", following that with a string of memorable Top 10 classics like "Blue Angel", "Running Scared", "Crying" and "Dream Baby", all included here along with his other chart entries from that time. This great-value 58-track 2-CD set provides a comprehensive overview of the formative years of his career, comprising the A and B sides of all his singles on Sun, RCA and Monument through to the end of 1962, plus all the tracks from his three albums from that period, "At The Rock House", "Lonely And Blue" & "Crying", which were not otherwise released on singles. It charts his progress towards establishing the style and formula which made him one of the most popular and respected artists of his generation and is a fine showcase for an exceptional talent.
